How bank bonuses work
- What do I have to do?
- Open a checking account, send part of your paycheck there by direct deposit for a month or two, and the bank deposits the bonus. Most payroll systems let you split your deposit, so the rest of your pay stays where it is.
- Will it hurt my credit?
- Usually not. Most banks check ChexSystems, a separate banking history report, rather than your credit report.
- Is it taxable?
- Yes. Bonuses count as income, and the bank usually sends a 1099-INT.
- What's the catch?
- Fees if you miss a waiver, and some banks take the bonus back if you close too early. Autopilot tracks those dates for you.
