The Bank Bonus Index

In the median state, a worker taking home $2,000 every two weeks could collect about $3,950 in bank sign-up bonuses from accounts opened over the next 12 months, after fees and before taxes. Across the 50 states and D.C. our model ranges from $3,250 (8 states) to $5,575 (Ohio).

These are modeled totals, not typical results. They assume the person opens about 14 accounts in a year, two at a time, meets every requirement on time, is approved everywhere, and hasn't had these accounts before. It also assumes offers with no stated end date stay open all year; they make up about 17% of the median state's total. Bank bonuses are generally taxable income.

Modeled total: bonuses from accounts opened over the next 12 months, after monthly fees, before taxes. Accounts: how many accounts that takes. Banks statewide: banks with at least one verified offer anyone in the state can open online. More in some areas: banks whose offer is limited to certain counties, to branch visits, or (by the bank's own warning) to its branch areas. The last two columns show on wider screens and in the CSV.

The quickest to pay, counted from opening

Days from opening the account to the bank's latest payout date, in the median state plan that uses the offer. That includes about a week to set up your payroll split and the wait for your next payday, plus the bank's own payout window (banks sometimes state it in business days; we convert to calendar days).
